How do you read- as a reader, reviewer, or writer?

Do I read as a reader, reviewer, or writer? As an avid reader passionate about reading, I have a varied interest and purpose for reading.  As I read a book, I am interested in objectively analysing its merits and demerits.  Does it justify the author's claim about the book in the description? How has it resolved the conflicts the protagonist is made to encounter?

The answer to the question depends on the type of reader you are?

Types of readers and where do you feature?

Depending on the purpose and preferences in reading, there are different types of readers.  Some are casual readers who read for pleasure and relaxation and do not dedicate much time to tasks.

Some are genre-specific readers or fiction and non-fiction readers.  Some are avid readers passionate about reading, consume various books, have diverse reading interests and seek varied authors and genres.

I should put myself in the last type- an avid reader.  I am also a writer.

As an avid reader passionate about reading, I have a varied interest and purpose for reading.  As I read a book, I am interested in objectively analysing its merits and demerits.  Does it justify the author's claim about the book in the description? How has it resolved the conflicts the protagonist is made to encounter?

Now the question is: how do I read?

Do I read as a reader, reviewer, or writer? As an avid reader passionate about reading, I have a varied interest and purpose for reading.  As I read a book, I am interested in objectively analysing its merits and demerits.  Does it justify the author's claim about the book in the description? What is its narrative style, and are the characters real?  My purpose is to mark the book as a message to other readers.  For that, I must read the book as a reviewer because I have to take the book to the world.

Publishing a book is a hectic task that an author has to tackle.  After that, it is a test time for the book in which the author has no role.  Those who hold its lifeline are the reviewers.

An avid reader, being a reviewer, she could:

  • Send to the world a critical analysis of the books.
  • Was it well-written
  • was it interesting
  • Was it informative, or what is the takeaway from the book.

If the book features high in all these categories, the review assists the author with the sale.  If the book does not feature high in the above categories, the review does the opposite.  But this helps the readers make the right decision and the author to improve her subsequent work.

The reviewer is also an author.

Reviewing a book helps the reader to be in the right mindset of an author.  Authors are generally good reviewers.  There is a trade-off in this.   Reviewing a book allows the author to strategise better in her writing.   The mistakes she gathered in a book she reviewed hang in front of her mind as a meter to regulate her not crossing into the red area and being safe.

Conclusion.

As an avid reader, I read as a reviewer and a writer.   What kind of a reader are you?  Do you agree with my position that an avid reader reads as a reviewer and a writer?
